This months "Meteorite Episode" via youtube is "Meteorite Hunting on a Dry Lake Bed (Day 2)". Watch as I rise early only to find that my friends Paul and Mike have already begun the hunt. What's more is that they've just completed a successful all-night hunt at Gold Basin, and are now planning to hunt most of the day with me!
Mike Morgan and Paul Desilets have only been hunting meteorites for about a year and a half. In that short time I've taught them how to find meteorites on a dry lake bed, desert pavement and even blowout areas, and all by sight alone. They've become very successful meteorites hunters, and it's probably due to their persistence and hard work more than my incredible teaching skills.
One technique we typically use on a dry lake bed is to continuously keep the sun to our backs. Shadows can be a meteorite hunters worst enemy. However, on this morning the intense cloud cover eliminated the need to do this. Since there were no shadows we were free to walk in any direction.
On day one I dealt with triple digit temperatures and day two was cloudy and very windy. In this short video you will see how incredibly difficult and demanding finding a meteorite can be, even for seasoned meteorite hunters.
